How's life in Taiwan? Living as a foreigner, specifically a U.S citizen?

I'm set to work there for a couple of years.

I'm mostly concerned about the quality of life. Food, weather, people and expenses...ANYTHING!!! Much appreciated!!!

It's phenomenal!! Taiwan has consistently ranked as the top country for expats or in the very top for how many years now? You'll love it.
hey are you from Taiwan
American living here as a legal resident.
lies.
ok can we chat privately please.
yeah, no!
lmao spammer.
Annie sandra sent to Jeremy Mandelkern ok send me a friend request.

Start learning mandarin now.
DuoLingo is free, or there is a paid version too.
Good luck with that, I've been trying for a few years and still just know a few basics, not enough to converse with yet. It's incredibly difficult.
any suggest on learning tw mandarin? I need to find a way to communicate with them. They dont used English.

It is important to know duolingo teaches mainland, not Taiwan Mandarin so it will mess you up, especially on the Chinese characters.
I remember saying zao sheng hao my first morning in Taiwan and quickly learned I could only trust Duolingo so much.
Luckily, I have some background with Japanese which helped with the traditional Chinese characters used in Taiwan.

It's subjective but quality of life here in Taipei is great!
The MRT and ubikes make getting around easy.
Food is fantastic if you know where to look, lots of noodle dishes, tropical fruit.
便當 are cheap and delicious lunch boxes found all over.
Weather is hot, but winter was surprisingly cool in the north.
Just gotta watch for earthquakes and typhoons.
WHERE TO EAT ?
You said it right.
Suggest new comers go to a Taiwanese "BUFFET" (lunch/dinner).
There's a lot of food choices if you don't like fried foods.
Also, ALL VEGETARIAN "BUFFET".
Pick what you like and pay at the cashier counter.
You can dine in or have the food to-go.
I agree, the buffets are great, I often go the the vegetarian ones, they have a lot of fake meat alternatives which are delicious.
And lots of places sell the lunch boxes on the side of the road out front of their restaurant at midday.

Food is stunningly good.
Food from all over China, there is also anything you want except Mexican.
Chinese don't "get" salted beans. Typically beans are sweet in Asia.
theee are a few decent Mexican places in Taipei.
Food is good if you know where to buy it.
I would say that half of lunch places that I've gone to had too greasy ingredients or didn't offer too much vegetables.
Same goes for some products in supermarkets, for example breadlike products are just overly sweet.
But overall food may still be better than in some other countries.
have had some good Mexican in Taiwan in multiple cities.
i agree with the others it is possible to find good Mexican food here but good western bread is very hard to find.
And pray there'll be a Taiwan next year.
are you in Taiwan?

US citizen here.
Food is phenomenal, people are great (but you’d benefit from learning some Chinese first).
You can save a ton here too, as long as you aren’t going out clubbing or throwing away money at bars all the time.
I’ve spent time living in China (1 year) and Japan (5 years) and this is by far my favorite place.
I am located in Taipei though, not sure how it’d be in the country side…

Jordan Vladic I have been living and working in S. Korea for 5 years and now I am here for almost double time.
I love to stay here and for me Taiwan is the best place to live as expat.
Everything is excellent and so far nothing to complain about except traffic.

Stjepan Svržnjak tjooo guys
so are you with your families over there?
What happens if you die!? You will be buried there?

Stjepan Svržnjak can i ask what job do you do and if you speak mandarin?
I am automation engineer and I don't speak Mandarin very well because my profession requires English.
ahhh. So great job. Of course. Probably as a teacher I wouldn’t be so well off there.
Aneta Kocisova Probably.
Stjepan Svržnjak one guy said working in S. Korea he is a teacher and living from paycheck to paycheck. So most probably. Anyway, best of luck.
Aneta Kocisova Yea, in S. Korea life is tough, especially for Americans.
Jordan Vladic you can save a ton if you’re on an expat salary. Local salary is a different ballgame.

ball game. The ball's in someone's court.

A whole new ball game

I have done a lot of mountain climbing in Taiwan, but the Himalayas were a whole new ball game.

Jordan Vladic how would you compare Japan vs Taipei?

Alan Kasim
If you're on a US salary, your life in Taiwan will be wonderful. However, the worst thing about living in Taiwan for most people are the painfully low local salaries, usually accompanied with a poor work culture (lots of overtime, office politics, etc.). In relation to even most skilled expat salaries, the cost of living in Taipei City is disproportionately high and the quality of buildings is generally low. However, Taipei is very small, so you can save a lot of money and live somewhere far nicer if you're willing to commute a bit. None of this will matter to you if you're working for a US company with a reasonable US salary. If you are, you'll be very comfortable and happy living in the City.
Alan Kasim on point!
Alan Kasim buildings are usually of low quality if you pick one of those shabby buildings.
And in the broad sense, if they were all of really poor quality, I reckon a good portion of them would have collapsed when the earthquake hit Hualien in April.
Use common sense, do a lot of research, you should be a be able to find something decent.
Alan Kasim
Kevin Chuang poor quality may not refer to structure issues .
Buildings often have problems with mold .
Health issues aside leather products tend to get damaged quickly .
If you have such goods it would be wise to pack a quality leather cleaner .

I'm taiwanese by birth but moved to UK as a child. I recently come back 10 days in Taiwan and felt people were nice in general, everything was organised and v clean. Its also cheaper than Europe and UK to eat out, travel. I don't know the wages in Taiwan so can't comment . Transport on mrt was clean and on time. Public bathrooms v clean compared to UK and I felt safe walking around at night.
The only thing I struggled with was the humidity. If I was younger and didn't have ties in uk I would move back to taiwan. Loved the food
Wasn't all fried stuff. We had hotpots noodles, and I saw lots of other oriental foods. We had sushi as well and it was the best I had. I come back to London and see what an unfriendly city I live in with awful crime rates, bad food that's expensive and a joke of a transport system plus its v dirty.

Annie Sandra AEIOU=an are you a American or an American.
George Klopper an American but currently in Taiwan.
Ian Eichelberger I am glad to hear your feedback as an American. I am also from the USA and have been thinking about moving to Taiwan. I have been a few cities in Taiwan as a tourist. Love the food and culture there.
As an American moving aboard, medical quality and cost are most concerning matter. Especially, when I am not a citizen there. How do you rate their dental and medical CP value?
Vickey Lee It's fantastic, dental x rays for $5.
I got my APRC last year (permanent residency).
Vickey Lee It's fantastic, dental x rays for $5.    last year (permanent residency).
Ian Eichelberger no way. I suspected it would be cheaper. (Where could be more expansive than US medical cost!) Are you sure? You must have the government medical plan or something.
Vickey Lee Yes, standard universal healthcare.
Average copay for Dr is between 180- 240 NTD depending on if you are seeing a specialist. I spent about $800 NTD last time I went to the ER.
So thats like ehh $5.50- 7.50, and the ER was $24.
Ian Eichelberger congratulations. Life is even better there being APRC.
Ian Eichelberger I paid at least US $20 copay for a non specialist Dr visit. That is ~$650NT for today's exchange rate. A hospital stay with my PPO plan was ~$3000 per day in last Sept.
What a blessing of you to have the Taiwan government coverage.
Vickey Lee Yeah, well if you have your ARC and need coverage, just go to the insurance office next to the hospital and register.
Ian Eichelberger I don't have and won't be qualified to have APRC.  I was hoping it could still be affordable for non resident.
Ian Eichelberger sorry. II really didn't mean to occupy your time to answer my ignorant questions. It is late evening there already. Please enjoy your evening and don't bother to continue my chat. I am thankful for your hanks feedback as an American already. Appreciated.

terrible traffic. anyone could get hurt or die for traffic accidents.
My car was my main means of transportation the 6 years I was in Taiwan, never got into an accident. Auto is fine. Scooters though…

Great food and great people and great vibe in Taipei. People are also mostly honest but for some reason like to pretend they don’t carry guns everywhere. Yeah right, a country thinking to defend itself against commies invading without a 2nd Amendment type of thing.

I love Taiwan food best. Din Tai Fung restaurants are cool.
don't have to come to Taiwan for thatz Din tai fung is everywhere now.
what do you mean everywhere ? I came to Taiwan since 2006 almost every every year. They have Din Tai Fung in siangapore too. My point is that Taiwan has exellent food far better than america for sure( only My opinion )
There’s Din Tai Fung in Thailand, Malaysia, America... plus America has food from everywhere else, so doesn't that mean food in America is better?
A US citizen haha
About traffic, scooter and bicycle accidents are the largest source of accidental U.S. citizen deaths in Taiwan, as scooters often fail to obey traffic laws or follow generally accepted driving practices.
Although pedestrians have the right of way in marked crosswalks, drivers often do not yield; therefore, it is incumbent on pedestrians to check for traffic when at crosswalks.
And if you drive on your own, you have faced aggressive driving, unprovoked road rage, road blocking and unmotivated police officers. Each day, around 9 lives, are lost on the roads, with over 539,000 injuries yearly.
To be honest, quality of life is superior in America as salary, with opportunities, healthcare and safety are definitely better.
There is a problem of quality of environment..if you don't care bout it it's a nice place. If you like clean peaceful politeness and harmony.dont try.
it really depends on where you are from in US. In general, public transportation is good and traffic is always a mess, so don't drive. Living cost is low, but not housing. Food is good (great to me!) if you like Asian food. Weather is hot and humid - just think the opposite of LA. And he best part is health care - affordable and accessible.
Kaohsiung is better, we live and work there almost decade, ASE Company.
Health care, transportation, cost of living, people around u, better than Taipei for aby other city
As an American that grew up in both east and west coast and 5 other developed countries, Taipei is the best city I've ever lived in. The only problems I have are: weather, crazy riders and drivers, and my career doesn't exist here. Even the Michelin restaurants here are way cheaper than back in the States.
You are foreigner from rich country so everything will be fine.
However more and more taiwanese young people are leaving and working at other countries for higher salaries and life.

Maroš Axamit
I am writing this as a European living in Taipei, Ximen.
Food: 3 out of 10. Although generally much cheaper than in the USA or Europe, it is quite difficult to cook because kitchens are poorly equipped and many Taiwanese cannot cook. Food is generally nor tasty, neither healthy. On the other hand, there are hundreds of cheap, small restaurants everywhere. Fruits and vegetables in supermarkets are extremely expensive (at least compared to Europe).
Weather: Warm and humid; summer is really hot. If you prefer warmer weather and do not like freezing winters, you will like it. In summer, you have many "friends" like cockroaches, mosquitoes, geckos (they are cute), and recently a 10 cm long huntsman spider came to visit us 😃 (4 out of 10).
People: Usually very nice when you meet them. Life is not as stressful as in countries like Japan, Korea, or Europe. Taiwanese are chill. However, it is difficult to make close friends. All but 2-3 of my friends here are foreigners (from Europe, America, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea), and those 2-3 have lived abroad. The culture and mentality are much different than in Europe, and they will never consider you one of them, even though you speak fluent Mandarin and have lived here for a long time, because you are white. However, many Taiwanese want to learn English and/or find a white partner, so it is easy to find a boyfriend/girlfriend or a language partner. Also, some of them really like foreigners, especially Americans and Europeans, so sometimes, especially outside Taipei, you can feel like a star (though it is not as extreme as in other Asian countries). Most foreign girls I know here have experienced stalking and harassment, and those boys do not take a simple "NO" for an answer. My advice: If you experience that, shout, fight back. Another thing (and this is the same in other Asian countries too): If you are in danger/need, people around are hardly going to help you because they do not want to intervene in other people's affairs. Once, I was attacked by a drunk man with a broken glass bottle, and other people just stood around and watched (he wasn’t a threat to me, and when I pushed him back he almost fell down and stopped, but I find it interesting that they did not feel they should do something). EDIT: I need to add that Taiwan is considered to be much safer than US (6 out of 10)
Administrative: This is a pain. Taiwanese strictly follow rules, even if those rules are 100% irrational and useless. The system is really old; almost every document needs to be delivered by yourself in paper form, and they will try to convince you to use this stamp instead of a signature. Official websites look like they're from 1995 (that is not an exaggeration), and there is no demand to change this. Be ready for this. However, a lot of administrative workers are nice, so at least you do not feel so stupid that you do not understand the system 😃. And they also have volunteers, willing to help you in offices. (1 out of 10)
Language: If you are going to stay here for a long time, I would recommend learning some Mandarin. You can use English, but it is pretty limited (though better than in other Asian countries). I personally couldn't imagine myself living here without Mandarin. (5 out of 10 for English speakers)
Services: Some services, such as convenience stores, deliveries, MRT (subway/underground), trains, and cinemas, are above average for sure. Not much to complain about here. (9 out of 10). EDIT: Healthcare and hospitals in general are on the high end.
Cities: You have many public toilets and drinking fountains - that is cool, too. But hardly any trash cans. Cities are usually not so clean and sometimes kind of smelly. Building are old and ugly (3 out of 10)
Traffic: It is not the worst, but certainly a shock for someone who drives in Europe. You can have a green light for both pedestrians and cars at the same time. There are a lot of motorcycles, some of which ride on the pedestrian path. It is quite wild 😃. They also have this bike service, like we have in Europe (I do not know how common it is in the US), so if you prefer riding a bike, try it. (5 out of 10)
Expenses: Accommodation is expensive, and apartments are usually quite small and old. Flight tickets are quite high, too - because it is the only way to get off the island. As I said, fruits and vegetables are a luxury. But transportation in general (including taxis), restaurants, and basic services are usually much cheaper than in Europe or the US. (5 out of 10)
That's pretty much it. I like to live here, but I couldn't imagine myself living here my whole life. 6 out of 10.
Maroš Axamit super si to napisal. Ak sa mozem opytat co tam robis?

Maroš Axamit , “fruit and vegetables are a luxury”?!!
I don’t know what kind of salary you are making there by you probably need to make some changes. I can definitely say even local people on a local salary find fruit and veggies dirt cheap in Taiwan!
The OP is from the US, no doubt she will find the price of food as well as everything else there double cheaper than in the US.
Maroš Axamit ,“水果和蔬菜是一種奢侈”?!!

To America and now a citizen if I didn’t tell u I am an immigrant u d think I was born in the US I will very much prefer Taiwan for quality of life. Standard of living, insurance, education, diversity, culture, every single aspect I prefer Taiwan. This is a wealthy and extremely safe country.

(Guōtiē) Fried dumplings or potstickers are also very popular in Taiwan.
They are just pork and fried dough, so I am sure any American would love them at first bite.
Just dumplings in a varied form ....
Mix flour and water as a solution-base to steam dumplings and the bottom of the dumplings will become a layer of crispy crust .... Crunchy and smelling good .... Pretty easy to make them by yourself at home really.

We live in taiwan. . . . . of course we bring our bowls up yo our mouths to eat.
If you see our kids eating like this in America this summer…just know it’s perfectly acceptable (and expected) in Taiwan.
My kids are so used to it! They don’t even know that it’s taboo in America.

Hi! I'm new to this group. I recently joined because my son will be studying in Taiwan this summer.
Welcome to Taiwan. I am taking my son back to Taiwan next month as well, maybe can connect? Does he speaks any Chinese?
Me too. I am taking my daughter back to Taiwan for the month of July and till August 6. It will be great to connect!
Awesome! We plan to arrive on June 14 and he depart on Aug. 25.
I have apartment in Taichung but I will take him traveling around Taiwan and visit friends. Do you have any relatives in Taiwan?
I do, but I will stay mostly in Taipei in an Airbnb due to space limitations. My daughter will attend a volunteer camp mostly though.
That sounds a nice plan. Let’s keep in touch and see what we can do. By the way we live in Ottawa Canada.
Yes, let’s dm then.  "DM me" is short for "direct message me." Are a feature on social media platforms like Instagram that allow users to send private messages ...
Wonderful ! My daughter and I will be there next month!
Better fill up his backpack with cash jobs here are a challenge to get them.

My son is going to study Chinese in Taiwan this summer with CIEE. Which program is your son in?
Taiwan is beautiful! My son is wrapping up a year abroad in Taipei- your son will have an amazing time!
Oh stop it. Fake account. Why do they do this? But I’m glad people are willing to answer you even though u have no intentions of ever coming here.
Taiwanese people are very warm and friendly, and there is delicious food everywhere. Except in winter, the weather is slightly cooler. Be careful because the vehicles on the street are very crowded. Everything else should be safe. This is my personal opinion.
I have vacation there for 12 years months at a time. I will be retiring there. Taiwan is exceptional. That is for sure. I do prefer the southern part of Taiwan.
I’ve lived and studied in the US …. But let me tell you that Taiwan is very very advanced in tech , immaculate etiquette , great civic sense . Some of the best people in the world … kind compassionate and very honest .
The only place I see you having and issue is language unless you speak Mandarin . Even then , I’ve been there 5 times and have never had a problem even though they hardly speak English .
I wouldn’t even twice think if I was to move there ! I love Taiwan.
When I left in 2019, medical services are excellent if u re resident u get a social security card it s inexpensive, rents were getting very high, u ll need learn enough Chinese to get by.

Taiwan is a great place to live. The people are friendly and the food is great. Housing was a bit expensive but I was in New Taipei city. It is beautiful and clean. I loved my three years there and could live there for the rest of my I'm Australian and I'm making the move in August.. Not optimal if you're an artist though.
What part of US are you from?... Taiwan is kind of like LA / NY city life but with way better quality of life, health care, food, nightlife, shopping, way easier to get around with mrt and busses and people are friendly... With US salary you'll be just fine. Nothing to worry about.... Also safer than all the liberal states in the US.
I’m American and I was in Taiwan 6 years ago. I love Taiwan and I really wish to visit again someday.

I moved to Kaohsiung in 2000, coming from Long Island, NY where I was born and raised. In terms of the cost of living vs quality of life, at the time, I considered Kaohsiung to be about 85 to 90% quality of life (overall), and at 25% of the cost. Taking into consideration personal safety (excluding driving here which is like being IN a video game), cost and quality of Healthcare (I'm 69 years old and recovering fully from stage 4 cancer diagnosed in April of 2023), food here is easy to get and cheap if you know where to look, especially fresh fruits and veggies from the various markets, the people here are generally quite friendly and helpful, the weather (Kaohsiung, like Tainan and Taichung) enjoy at least 300 days/year of sunshine, and winters are short and mild (think Florida weather). Major complaints are no pizza places that can really compete with those on Long Island, same thing with bagels, Italian sausage, and things like deli meats, spiralcut ham and some other pork products, but that list is shrinking (local avocados are outstanding, I just bough butternut squash in Changhua last week, and others like zucchini are being introduced each year. When I left LI in August 2000, my weekly food bill (mostly supermarket) was USD200/week, whereas even today, buying as much as possible from markets and local take-out vendors, usd200/month is easily doable. Any questions?

I need help to find a 711. Can you please tell me where there is one? Thanks!
It will be quicker to tell you where there ISN'T one.
Where I live the nearest 7/11 is an hours drive away.
711? what's that? never seen one in Taiwan!!!
right?!
I been in Taiwan lastmonth to many 7/11 anywhere.
Next to a Family Mart!
never heard of it.
yes,711 are next to family mart nearby my room .
are you saying I need to go to your room¿
I'm serious I really need to get a hot dog.
There was a food truck by my house the other day. They had Chili Dogs!! It was amazing! But then they never came back. And I am sad.

God this is hard. One time my bike got stolen, this is right up there. My bike even had a bell. Stole that sucker too.
Google maps ? Google is Ur best friend.
Just around the corner!
Open Google maps.
Type 7-11
Hit search.
There will be at least 15 in walking distance
I found a ok mart. I am not ok. This is not ok.
then try family mart.
You just need to keep your head up when walking. Trust me.
Are you sure you are in Taiwan, not in China? You literally walk 10 steps and there is 7-11 already.
yes everybody calls me 幹您娘 which I heard in Taiwan means cool tiger.
To some people here, he is just being sarcastic guys come on. The fact that every corner has 711.
not everyone understands sarcasm, I believe is more a western concept....
I don't understand it either I'm just dumb.
the product of American education maybe?
oh you can't blame school I didn't go to that trash hole. In Florida we went to the beach and smoked salvia which is incredible that it was legal. I only went to school to use the photography dark room. Sarcasm is a lifestyle. It's the divorce of self from empathy. Live for the confusion and make it worse. The universe is chaos and so is finding a 711.
Why you don’t ask google.
how do I get to Google? Where do they live?
I sure am not sick today.
Look out the window. You'll see one.
Maybe you can find your hot dog in your dream, sweet dreams..
I only find very cold dogs in my dreams. Hot dog popsicles are not ideal.

on the real I've thought about opening a cram school or like class to teach slang, weird cultural shit, and yes sarcasm which doesn't exist in Chinese. I use sarcasm when speaking to locals in Chinese very often and it gets me in the most awkward situations. It's hilarious.
There are nearly 7000 in Taiwan, walk outside you should find one quickly.
True story. I was in Taiwan 5 years ago. My aunt got lost driving us to a seafood banquet because she didn't have the name or address of the restaurant. But I found it and guided us with Google Maps.
I cannot believe it. I'm just glad you guys are safe.
Just pick a random direction and start walking, you will see one within 5min max.
I am now standing in the ocean. What do I do now?
Just turn your head and look left or right…
I shut my eyes, did a 360°, opened them and there's no 711.
Frickin everywhere.
Lol obviously a super troll post.
nah uh I'm really in trouble here if I don't find a 711 by the next 29 minutes they're going to release my web cam footage.

Kei Trucks - Why Are They So Popular In The United States?
Shooting Cars
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3rV3JHrjW4

you might have noticed tiny little
trucks hitting the streets here in the
U.S their steering wheels are on the
wrong side they're smaller than Miatas
but more useful than most of our
homegrown Vehicles what are they and
where did they come from
[Music]
we should start off with some vocab when
I say K car I don't mean the 80s
Chrysler platform this is a k car K
spelled Kei is a Japanese classification
of car dating back to the late 1940s in
1949 following the end of the second
world war Japan wanted to focus on
rebuilding their industry one of these
industries they wanted to grow was the
automotive industry which was nearly
non-existent at the time the issue was
money cars are expensive Most Japanese
families could only afford a motorcycle
at the time because of this the
government made a classification of
vehicle to bridge that Gap a motorcycle
priced car this started the K car class
there were rules of course the engine
could only be 150 CC's or less and the
dimensions had to be under 9.2 feet in
length and 3.3 feet in width as time
went on these restrictions grew to where
the modern case cars can have up to 660
CC engines and they can be 11.2 feet
long and 4.9 feet wide owning a k car
also has a bunch of monetary benefits
they're cheaper to register they come
with tax breaks and some places even
have special cheaper parking just for
k-cars around 2014 the Japanese
government reduced these benefits
drastically but you still get some
reduction for owning the small cars K
cars come in all shapes and sizes well
not all sizes they're pretty small but
there's plenty to pick from there's Vans
trucks hatchbacks and even sporty
roadsters when referring to K cars it's
important to know your ABCs A
is for
B is for
C is for
those are the three most popular K cars
they're sporty fun and pocket-sized
which us Americans find fascinating if
someone says that they love K cars it's
probably one of those three but why are
we seeing more and more K trucks in
America well there's two main reasons
here in the United States we have a
25-year import law for personal vehicles
you can import any vehicle you want no
matter the make model or region of
origin as long as it's 25 years or older
there are many reasons why it's
specifically 25 years but maybe that's a
topic for a future video cave Vehicles
hit their stride in the 1990s they were
mostly fuel injected and they were
allowed to have these 660 CC engines
after 1990. the 1990s although as much
as some of you don't want to admit it
happened now over 25 years ago tons of
quality fantastic trucks are now
eligible to import
we have small pickups available here
most of them are Gators or razors or
what have you they're basically golf
carts on steroids but they're super
useful on farms and in the country the
problem is most places don't allow them
on the road and the places that do allow
them on the road make it a real headache
to register they're also not built to
sustain highway speeds overall they're
too big of a heartache to drive in the
real world take for instance this
Polaris Ranger a two-seater vehicle with
a rear truck bed if I configure this
2023 model to have what a k-truck would
have as in doors a roof front and rear
glass mirrors a heater and a radio the
MSRP is over 19
000 for a vehicle you still can't
legally drive on the road so then let's
look at some k-truck prices sure these
prices are before import to the US so
double that price in your head you're
still nowhere near the price of the new
Polaris here are a couple that are for
sale at the time of making of this video
that are already here in the US ready to
be picked up interesting none of them
are nineteen thousand dollars factor in
the fact that most of them have four or
five speed transmissions and can be
driven on the road legally it all starts
to make sense
over the last few years I've noticed
more and more out and about in the world
from snow removal to flower shops these
little workhorses are becoming a top
pick for business owners and enthusiasts
alike it's a shame that we never got
these originally but due to safety
restrictions from the government and the
American idea that small engines are
useless they wouldn't have been allowed
or sold really well but thanks to the
25-year rule we are now able to get
these trusty little trucks in our
possession
thank you for watching my latest video
essay sometimes I get these video ideas
they just come to me and I get obsessed
so thank you for checking out my latest
fixation if you want to see my other
video essays you can click on them now
and if you have an idea for a future
essay please let me know in the comments
section down below

I can attest to this. I work for a large Japanese vechicle importer. A lot of our US customers buy a lot of these small trucks.

Can the Suzuki Carry Mini Truck survive the 4x4 Alpine loop in Colorado?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15II6COQOHc
Glen Shelly

and then we added these lighted grips to make it FAA legal for me.
grip · n.

On today's episode, we're
going to see if our 1992 Suzuki carry mini truck can four wheel with the big boys.
To do that, we're going to put it to the test on the Alpine loop
in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado.
Our route will take us over some of the most rugged and remote terrain
in the country and will only have the modifications
that we did to the mini truck to keep us out of trouble.
The K series was the smallest class of street
legal Japanese vehicle that was restricted by engine size, payload and dimensions.
It's basically a miniature car powered by a motorcycle engine that's used
in urban settings and flourishes there thanks to its small stature.
They make K vans, they make little K fire trucks
and little K ambulances, which is hilarious.
It was originally designed by Georgetto Giugiaro
Similar to the A-class European vehicles.
They were never federalized or legal for street use here,
but thanks to the 25 year rule now you can import them.
It's the ninth generation Suzuki carry
powered by a 657 cc three cylinder engine.
It's got a five speed manual gearbox with a six low speed granny gear
plus reverse rear lockers 4x4
and an AM radio.
Then I ruined it by putting 25 inch tires on it.
We did a two inch lift.
We did upgraded suspension in spring and then muddy bottom shocks.
Then we built this roll cage in the back with a cane back
to make it able to haul stuff.
It's got fold down bedsides on every side.
We added the rack, we added lights for snow, plowing at nighttime,
and then we added these lighted grips to make it FAA legal for me
to cross the runway.
We skid plated the whole underside from the radiator back to the transfer case.
We added this kill dozer-esque bumper, which replaced
the plastic factory bumper, and its purpose is three fold.
Most importantly, it looks bad ass.
Secondly, it protects the radiator and the approach angles.
And third, it gives us a recovery point in the event that we need to miniature
recover a stuck jeep or 4runner when we're up in the mountains.
According to the guidebook,
the Alpine Loop is a 63 mile loop through the spectacular heart
of the San Juan Mountains, but it warns that it's demanding two 12,000 ft
passes require a high clearance, four wheel drive vehicle,
but the well-prepared motorist reaps unparalleled rewards.
What we're going to test today is have we prepared
the mini truck enough to handle that miniature 4x4 challenge?
Our journey actually began in the Northern Colorado
town of Pipsburg, where mobile mechanic Titus Larson
pulled an all nighter to get the mini truck ready for the mission.
The rear and the rears are like two.
Yeah, that's a lot.
Yeah, because they're turning the same way.
So I was handed
a phone call basically where I was like, can you bend metal?
And then it got kind of tossed back in my lap.
It I should do the whole project.
And so, so I bring it out.
I got the front bumper kind of designed and thrown together
and then to major skid plates to cover pretty much everything underneath.
And then you gave it a good once over.
We fixed the vacuum line.
Totally did found a couple of ground.
Found a couple whose fault reminds me of like a side by side on steroids.
Now, this thing's cool.
Yeah, I'm stoked.
I can't wait to see it on the trail.
Driving down from northern Colorado, we pulled into Lake City
just before sunset.
There was just enough daylight left to say hi to the locals.
Our base camp would be Castle Lake's airstrip.
The high altitude mountain airstrip would make a great place to based out of.
In the morning
we woke up to another JDM 4x4, a Mitsubishi Delica
driven by Scott Anderson, who would be running support
got our mechanical gear pretty minimalistic.
I got my tool roll, I got a jump box, I got a second toro.
If it's not kinetic emergency lights, we got an extra air filter, oil
and Asian vehicle coolant.
Nothing's going to stop us today.
Nothing's going to stop us except for a trail
we might not be able to negotiate mechanics that should hold up.
between both vehicles,
any number of overheating or cooling issues.
Maybe a little bit of weather, bears, rogue Jeepers,
people that don't accept this and
into their culture.
Starting out from the airstrip,
we ran the Alpine loop in the counterclockwise direction.
It took a little bit for the mini truck to get up to speed,
but that made sense given how thin the mountain air was.
The mini truck got smiles, thumbs up and a few looks of concern.
And a little bit down the road we figured out where Lake City got its name.
So we stopped here at the Alpine Loop, about to head up to Engineer Pass,
and we thought we'd take a minute here to introduce Scott Anderson.
He's actually the guy who got the mini
truck from and also a fellow delica fanatic.
How many of these mini trucks, if you had probably had about six of them.
So far, importing them, picked them up, flipping them.
Definitely the one we did the most work on.
I honestly don't know how these I've never I mean, I've done like some light off
roading and a K truck before on smaller tires too, and less of a lift.
It did pretty good. So I think it'll do fine.
It's just a not a lot of clearance and up to like 12,000 feet.
I'm not sure if it's going to have
like torque to get over stuff, but the extra low gear should help. So
side by side,
the evolution of the ATV four wheeler.
And there's a reason like they're incredibly capable,
but they're also it can be a little expensive.
But, you know, the mini truck's kind of like
it's a good alternative that there's pros and cons.
You know, you certainly don't have the power, but you get windshield wipers.
Got all the accouterments that I'd have in the nineties era
Japanese vehicle and I think the power deficit with the tall tire
gearing is probably going to be my biggest challenge.
Our first stop was the U.
Lay mine in the abandoned ghost town of Hanson, Colorado.
The mine dates back to 1867 and lasted
through the 1960s mining silver and led out of the side of the mountain,
pulling out of the mine.
The road was smooth until we hit capital city.
But from there, things took a turn for the worse.
We're just pulling out of capital city, heading up to Whitmore Falls.
Not really getting a speedometer.
Not even come alive.
So there's going to be
a marathon.
And it's a balance between preserving the vehicle,
but making up enough time so that we don't get back
at midnight.
Why you got to look at me like that?
I just, we’re the same. Haha, we’re the same...
I just want to fit in, man.
It's my whole life.
The road got so bad.
The only way to make it passable was to let air out of the tires.
But fortunately, we found a nice cold swimming hole to heal our wounds in
We’re at Whitmore Falls.
First stop on the leg Engineer pass.
That water is cold.
It's so nice.
It's like the first thing you think of.
Like all the hot days.
How nice it is to,
be in a pristine mountain swimming hole.
I got to say,
that's probably one of my top swimming holes of the year.
So we air down the tires.
You took them down from 25 psi
Which was utterly miserable to 18 psi,
which is mildly tolerable.
And again, it's not like the super technical stuff,
but it is persistently challenging
the side by side with the vehicle of choice on the Alpine loop.
Second to that, we're lots of four wheelers.
But every once in a while we've run into something different.
We came around the corner
and he was just as surprised to see us as we were to see him.
We're just breaking free of tree line.
baby, Come on.
Yes, yes.
We burned a little bit of clutch there.
She's struggling a little
with the altitude as we climbed above 11,000 feet.
Many trucks started struggling in the thin mountain air.
It's all right, girl.
It's okay.
You're made to climb Mount Fuji. Remember?
See if we get in at first.
Come on, baby.
Yes. We've definitely Crested Treeline, and we're in the Alpine Tundra area now,
which is really cool.
We saw a marmut, couple plyka,
So this so far is the hardest feature we've had to do yet.
And it still looks relatively doable.
All right.
Sometimes you just got to send it.
All right.
There's the granny.
Send it number two.
Yes. Yes, I
You got nothing on the mini truck.
Ouch
thing I don't want to do is stop.
Starting out
It is just such an act of feathering the throttle.
Just the right amount.
I think I flooded it,
so I'm, like, letting the lead
break.
I get it too much gas and just get a little bit
easy break.
I'll try that.
You got it, girl.
We’re probably almost at 12,000 feet,
and this thing's jetted
for sea level, so it's totally flooding out.
I have to be very gentle.
It took a little bit of coaxing at times, but we finally made it to the top
of Engineer Pass at 12,800 feet.
The road was originally built
in the late 1800s by Otto Mears.
Mears was a California gold rush miner who settled in Colorado as a wheat farmer.
Eventually, he would build some of Colorado's tallest roads and railroads.
Top of the pass felt like we were on the top of the world,
but we still had a long way to go.
I flew over on Saturday morning
and I saw these sheep from like 14,000 feet.
But I was like, Man, there's no way there's like sheep up here at 12,000 feet.
And then we came around the pass and like, here they are.
And then these sheepdogs.
That's the father.
That's the mama.
Such a wonderful life these dogs
must have
getting hurt.
Sheep
coming down the backside of Engineer Pass.
The road only got worse.
But as our confidence in the mini truck grew,
we became willing to take more chances.
I would describe this drop off
as mildly consequential.
It's steep,
but at least it's grassy and therefore slightly soft.
I know it's not going to do any good.
But I still pucker.
I don't know that Scott will be able to take that line in the Delica.
He should just kind of go down the center,
Dropping in the tire pressure,
made a dramatic difference in the ride quality.
And we just went to like 18 psi.
But it's smooth like butter.
it's 615.
We got about an hour and 45 of daylight left.
If we were going to go to Ouray, we would take that down to the Engineer,
pass trailhead, which we're not going to do
because that puts us home tomorrow some time.
So we're going to continue through this saddle here
and then climb back up to Cinnamon Pass.
And I would say this part coming down
was the most technical so far, which was really fun.
The mini truck did great.
Being small and nimble has actually been pretty versatile.
It just makes me smile and it makes everybody else's smile.
Outside of the abandoned ghost town of Animas Forks.
We stop for a moment of reflection about the mini truck.
It's not better than the side by side to side by side.
They just cut through this stuff like a hot knife through butter.
But with that, I think you kind of lose some of the purpose of being here.
Seems like when you start getting to the really chunky stuff,
they can see the body moving around like a lot more than the delica, But
you can just take lines that I can't even think of.
Granite gear, speed.
Nice brakes are probably a little bit soft and that's probably fine.
Asked or not doing their problems. Yeah, we should probably
For,
kind of the basic check ups that it got in the year and a half of it.
Use it on the airport.
It really hasn't given us any problems.
I hope I don't need those.
Feeling confident,
we turned east and headed up the steepest part of the Alpine loop,
the arduous climb up to the top, a cinnamon pass.
We didn't know it at the time, but this would turn out
to be the biggest challenge for the mini truck.
12,600 feet.
sucking wind on cinnamon pass.
We got here just in time to watch the sunset.
And the last little bit actually was a little bit challenging.
I had full throttle in the granny gear and we were going up this little step.
And for a minute it felt like we were going to kind of stall out.
And those little cylinders just kept on jamming and it got us to the top.
So now the sun's going down.
We're going to finish the last third of our journey,
which is going to take us down cinnamon paths back down into the canyon,
and then hopefully into Lake City in time to grab a bite to eat.
In Colorado,
The reason to 4x4 is to get away from people.
Most people build big over landing rigs
because there's this arms race of how deep you can go into the wilderness
to get away from the campgrounds and the RV's and stuff.
So with the mini truck, instead of
going big, we went miniature.
It did incredibly well.
Like it far surpassed my expectations
in its ability to miniature 4x4 with the big boys.
We were by far the smallest thing out there.
I would say more agile, more nimble.
See what we gave up in ground clearance and tires and everything else.
We just picked our way through.
Yeah, it's true.
If you think about it.
Like this truck was basically designed to haul fish
maybe on some snowy roads or some dirt roads, like it certainly wasn't
designed to cross the tallest mountains and alpine passes in the lower 48.
But, I mean, bang for the buck, it's hard to beat the mini truck.
You know, for the most part.
We elicited looks of concern
from people, but once they got past that of us
just being a little bit different, the resounding effect it had the smiles.
I really didn't fit in as a kid like I didn't.
That troubled me for a lot of my youth.
But eventually I embraced that and really turned it into my strengths as an adult.
And like the mini truck doesn't fit in.
Just doesn't fit in.
But without passing judgment,
it did everything that was kind of asked by it.
I connect to it emotionally on that level.
And then the reason to do all these trips is just to get away, to be humbled,
to be out here in these spectacular mountains
and see a slice of the state here
in the wilderness that you usually can't see most of the year.
This is covered in snow and inaccessible. So
this has 45 horsepower go to 5000 feet.
Where I live, it's got 20% less.
Take it back up here.
Another 7000 feet.
We're doing all these passes with basically 20 horsepower.
There's three little cylinders.
You just chop it away and, you know, the fact that it was a little bit slower,
it gave us time.
It afforded us time.
They'll take the view and stop jumping the water.
Check out the mining kids in the Ghost towns, in the wildflowers.
And it was awesome.
We miniature 4x4 at some major passes
and I'm glad the mini truck answered the call.
Mission accomplished.
We had one more order of business to do before we left.
A little runway maintenance for my good friend for letting me stay at his airstrip.

it's just like a pickup truck but quite
a bit smaller three sides actually roll
down this was made in Japan they're
called K trucks but there's two main
reasons like what is the fuss about why
are Americans buying them there's two
main reasons one of them is that 25-year
import law in the United States that now
people can import these because they
were most popular in Japan back in the
1990s so now people are importing them
into the U.S and they are now using them
for personal use that other reason is
because farmers are finding them useful
they're also useful in country and rural
areas they can be driven on highways
unlike Gators they're also very
lightweight they have heat and air
conditioning and they're also very
affordable so on average speaking to the
owner of this dealer they cost about
forty five hundred dollars just to have
them imported here now if you want the
bells and whistles you want this thing
to be painted you're looking at about
eighty five hundred dollars now here's
the fun part an interesting part so a
lot of first-time buyers are actually
coming to this dealer to buy one of
these because it's like a hobby to fix
them up.

Mitch Adrian Kelsey I'm noticing that
that's a manual transmission and it's on

Hello everyone! I have a favor to ask. My boyfriend and I met in Australia, but he recently went back to Taiwan and his family wants him to stay there. I am Vietnamese and don't know any Mandarin. Currently, I am settled in Australia and work as an accountant. My boyfriend has convinced me to move to Taiwan, marry him, and settle down there. However, I am not sure if I want to leave Australia as I really like it here, but my boyfriend doesn't like living in Australia. I am concerned if I can find a job as an accountant in Taiwan and if it's easy for me to stay there without speaking Mandarin.
Thank for reading my post.

Hi, Cindy. To be honest with you, it's rarely possible to work as an accountant without speaking any Mandarin in Taiwan.
I would highly recommend you to rethink about your relationship with your boyfriend since you both have totally different blueprints for the future.
It's not only about the job, it's about everything you have owned in Australia so far. There will be huge sacrifices on your site and I am not sure if you are ready for it. Anyway wish you all the best.

The power of LOVE should be above from these materialistic things.
I observed in my experience mostly females End their relationships and hurt them just because of money and so called temporary things.
In my opinion get married and start life where you both want to do. Do not END relationship just due to Taiwan or Austrailia.
May God bless you both.

the same I think.

Yeah, you’re gonna be poor.
You’ll probably make 1/5 of what you make so unless your boyfriend is a top percentage, I would not leave.

Life is pretty good in Taiwan though, seems like, base level wise.

yeah if you you don’t mind working 100 hours a week and being extremely underpaid.
Life is good here other than the fact that you’re a slave to your job.

Are you really sure.

Obviously I’m exaggerating on the hundred hours a week.

Very obviously you have been but it’s true pay need to be as much as what they got in Aussie this I totally agree since the country is richer than Aussie now.

Hi Cindy. Finding work as an accountant without speaking Mandarin will be very challenging.
Perhaps you could work remotely from Taiwan for Australian or other English-speaking firms?

That's true.

I agree with.

You. Cultural difference is something you need to seriously consider before making decision for relocating to Taiwan.
Love alone may not be enough. Additionally, what is your boyfriend's family background?
Are you expected to stay with them after getting married? Is he expected to take over family business?

That is an excellent idea.
After COVID I did most of my accounting work through the computer and rarely need to meet up with anyone other than cleaning up and closing our office.
However I did toy with the idea of moving to Taiwan but have no idea how accounting works over there.
I do speak basic Mandarin....Very basic.
I heard people just need to take the tax form given to them by employers to the Government tax office and they do the calculation for you for free?

sorry we do speak Ho*Lo*h but not mandarin in DAIWAN.

To establish a career anywhere, first of all we need to master the language !
Mandarin is not easy to learn .
Well you can learn to speak but to write is a different story !
Unless you find a job at an international accounting firm where they speak English , I doubt you would be happy there in Taiwan .
Love fades; reality sinks in … But if you are young , you can try .
At least you try and do not regret .
Let’s say if things do not work out, you still can move back to Australia for a new beginning.
Think carefully , make wise decision and good luck to you !

That's true.

If you marry and have children you might not be able to leave with your children.
Continue the relationship long distance and think really carefully about what you are prepared to do.

Learn Mandarin!

Adapting to Taiwan without speaking Mandarin would take time and effort.
Certainly you would have to learn Mandarin, which would require a couple of years to become conversant.
The plus side is that Taiwan is very friendly.
People are accommodating, hospitable, and helpful.
But as Linda Chen said above, I doubt you could get a job without speaking Mandarin.
Sounds like your boyfriend is being pressured by his family.
Good luck.

Stay Australia!
Taiwan is friendly to foreigners but not friendly for the foreigners who want to stay in Taiwan,
all infrastructure and major daily activities aren’t international prepared,
even for opening an bank account took us more than 5weeks,
no foreign credit card can be accepted for the major online purchasing (ie Momo mall),
we couldn’t collect our registered mail at the Post offices due to no stamp (印章),
these are only a few issues you will face in Taiwan.
Most importantly, you will have no any support social network here.
You will be totally isolated, so my dear friend, wake up and be more realistic about this relocation.
All the best.

What you said is so true and that’s why here I feed back to you …
It’s like you still try to move what you felt comfortable in DAIWAN
yourself after how long you’ve been living here already that I do not know and no intention to …
but my advise is why carry such a task tho. what made you feel it’s worthy living in DAIWAN
if you don’t ever try to fit in… with suffering it is not reasonable to live here at all.

Totally agree with you.
For spending time with my elderly Daiwan mother, Im trying my best to resolve all obstacles daily, and really hoping things can be more flexible for foreigners.

I have been an alien for in South Africa America Japan even that post Manchu invaded district and I did find the best way to live is fitting in or simply stay away as a foreigner forever if you think you are …
but I did find myself a local in SA and US now …
but never in the other two …
because you just can’t …

one facto for me is I never fit myself in my birth country DAIWAN with the AutoBike and humidity since the day I arrived in I guess very tragically living for me honestly speaking.

same here, so try LG dehumidifier, it makes my life easier, hahah....

hey our DaiDong also does well tho.

I thought they only do rice cooker.

As a female, i have a different perspective particularly when different citizenships/nationalities, benefits, and moving for someone, and job security are involved.
Going to a country where you don’t speak the language nor have your own social network is already hard.
Uprooting for someone that you’re not yet married to, or have met the person’s parents, seen their social network and how they are in their normal environment can create friction especially when things don’t work out.
Job aside, are you ready to commit (and take this risk) when he hasn’t proposed?

your correct if the family does not yet offer their 300% supports no matter where which country NEVER jump in troubles for yourself unless this person is 3000% the Savior to you.

As a Taiwanese, most definitely stay in Australia.
Taiwan is great for visit but you'll be losing much more than you will gain.

You posted the exact same thing hours ago…

If you love him hold onto that.
That’s the most important thing.
If not then do what is best for you.

Without speaking mandarin u stand no chance.

You’ve got a tough decision, only you can make it,
however, unless you got a job offer in advance before coming to Taiwan
and not speaking mandarin will make your life a bit difficult in that sense,
just something to think about, but if you don’t mind
and love is at it’s peak, give it a try!!!!!!

Let your boyfriend take care of you..why are you worried about getting a job..if he really loves you he will take care of you..just chill in Taiwan.

Take a 1-2 week vacation in Taiwan.
Many of the questions and concerns will be answered.

Taiwan is one of my favourite countries to visit , but you can be lost without speaking Mandarin, because hardly any people speak English .
I have been 5 times over last decade and it’s still the same .
I would recommend you visit there on vacation and stay for a few weeks there first .
And then decide .
It’s not a good idea to make such a big decision without weighing your options .
Love alone cannot make it all last .
Also once you go you will understand the reality for your boyfriend.

Obv

Don't you ever dare to leave Australia.

Don't leave Australia!

LOVE vs FUTURE(CAREER/JOB). It's a tough decision.

In these foreign groups, we often expound on the virtues of Taiwan. You often hear about its beauty, safety, friendly people, etc. Yet, this post is overwhelmingly negative in regard to her moving here??
Is it not even worth a try? An adventure? A year or two?
Plus, this might be her Mr Right. Just sayin’
Dunno.🤷🏽‍♂️ interesting responses. Seems Taiwan has fallen a bit in people’s general estimation, compared to a few years ago…

Again ? You got 200 replies in your other posts .
How many times do you need to be told it’s a bad idea ?

Cost to value is the real reason some states are trying to ban these. Its not about safety, its about propping up the big 3 and forcing people to pay ridiculous prices. These small trucks defiantly have a use case. Let the people decide.

We just got a 1996 Daihatsu Atrai Van.
People love these Kei trucks, vans, cars here in the US. Really excited to own one and love Japanese car culture.
Now I just wish I spoke and could read Japanese.

I have been to Navy Yard in Baltimore.
It looked more like a historical and military site to me.
I took the USS Constellation' tour and learned a lot of American history on that tour.
The seafood in Baltimore was not bad either.
I think US is a great place for the wealthiest and the poorest, the two sides of the spectrum, while it's not the best place for the middle class.
If you are rich enough, you can pretty much get everything here with good quality, like education, medicare, etc while if you are poor enough, you can get a lot of things for free.
However, being a middle class would strand yourself in the between.
Basically, you are just scraping for a minimum life hardly with any help most of the time.

(Baltimore)'s cultural diversity is rich and diverse, attributed to its history as a migration hub and a maritime hub.
The city's culture reflects its pluralistic population composition, comprising various ethnic groups such as African Americans, Italian Americans, and Greeks.

A woman killed in a meth (methamphetamine甲基苯丙胺或甲基安非他命)lab turns out to be an informant. information.

CSI discovers that she was having a relationship with her married handler (已婚經理人), and that she was also pregnant.

When Ryan and Alex try fuming Rachel Hemming's corpse in her home looking for fingerprints, a fire starts, actually resulting from a short-circuited fan, which torches everything when it reaches the meth lab.

Horatio suspects the landlord Jeremy Broyles, who has three prior drug-related convictions.

On Heming's partially burned corpse Eric finds a melted bug and a partial print of her brother Zach, who claims he came from Ohio to get her out of the crime life but just left when she refused.

The bug's serial number leads to FBI agent Mike Farallon, who confirms she became his informant to escape a dealer conviction; Mike's wife Linda knew he slept around, as his former colleague Natalia Boa Vista, who recontacts the one he did three years ago before she came to CSI.

Rachel was pregnant, actually from Zach.

here there's no bins and no rubbish, I mean it defies logic really. . . .
